There are four phases to our redesign mahi, with many chances for you to get involved along the way

Scoping | September - October 2026

Online hui, an online survey and direct kōrero with Papatipu Rūnanga to hear about Rūnanga, community and whānau needs.

Fill out the survey, or register for an online session here.

Course redesign | November 2026 - February 2027

Working with whānau and experts, primarily at a noho marae in November, to collaboratively design two pilot courses to test new programme directions.

We’ll also be at Hui ā-Iwi - we’d love to see you there and hear your whakaaro.

Pilot courses | April 2027

Running two different week-long courses to assess different approaches, with opportunities for whānau to participate and provide feedback.

Spaces will be strictly limited so make sure you sign up for our newsletter to receive updates and registration information.

Reporting | June 2027

Assessing outcomes, honing which models work best and planning for future programmes, partnerships and funding.

Exploring Models

All potential versions include leadership and capability-building, and immersion in whenua, history and Ngāi Tahutanga. Specific new models we are exploring include:

  • Collective benefit model: participants bring an iwi, hapū or community-related kaupapa to develop on the course.
  • Iwi-wide connection model: the 18 Papatipu Rūnanga send one emerging leader each year, with a focus on building networks and capability across our different hapū.
  • Hapū-strengthening model: Each rōpū comes from one Rūnanga, with a focus on building kotahitanga and skills within that hapori.
  • Intergenerational model: someone of an older generation (e.g. parents, grandparents, uncles or aunts) and someone from a younger generation in their whānau (e.g. rangatahi or young adults) on hīkoi together to build connection, communication and resilience.
  • Accessibility model: Shorter, week-long programmes with no minimum fitness requirement to make the programme accessible to all.
  • Aoraki Bound tūturu: the original Aoraki Bound aimed at general Ngāi Tahu whānui 18-60+, combining tramping, paddling, visits to marae etc.
  • Alumni activation: involving the Aoraki Bound alumni in future courses to ensure ongoing growth and connection and a chance to give back.
